Questions & Answers

Here are some common questions asked between Britains collectors.

Melting Wheel Rims | White Plastic Gone Yellow | Brocken Celophane | Cleaning Models | Chipped Models | Buying Models | Selling Models | Release Dates | New Ideas | Powerfarm Problems | Books | Worn Hydraulics

Q: I have been storing my models for 5 years in the atic, when i brought them down the wheel rims looked like they were melting. Why is this?

A: It was discovered that some of the older models used a particular type of plastic that reacts with the plastic tray which the model sits in. Over time the reaction between these plastics will eat away at the rims.

Q: I have a Britains Iveco cattle lorry. I've had it quite along time. The white plastic shell that makes up the body of the truck has gone a yellow colour. Is there any thing i can do to bring back the white colour, like when it was bought?

A: There are a few methods you can use to clean the plastic. It is unlikely to be brilliantly white.

Q: I bought a model off ebay, only to find that the celophane window on the box was ripped and looked terible. What can I do about this?

A: You can by celophane from your local stationers shop. It also called OHP sheets. These sheets are the same thickness as the celephane used on the Britains boxes. Make sure you buy the OHP sheets without one side being textured. Some are textures to allow printer ink to stick. These are not suitable. Carefully remove the old damaged celophane and use this as a template to cut out a replacement. Use some thing like a Pritstick to glue thge celophane in place. You could use salatape to hold the celophane in place whilst it drys.

Q: Whats the best way to clean my models?

A: For more modern models you can use warm water and a small clean cloth. Gently use bthe edge of the cloth to clean the model. Dust can gather inside the cab, so you might want to use a cotton bud to reach the awkward corners. Its always a good idea to dry the model off as soon as you've finnished cleaning it. this will prevent water marks. Some of the older models need a bit more care. If you are to hard, you might take paint or decals off. Just use a soft brush to lightly brush any dirt off the model.

Q: What can i do about a tractor that has a chipped chassis?

A: You first need to find the suitable paint. I have taken a chipped Massey Ferguson 3680 tractor, stripped it down to just the chassis. I found that halfords do a suitable silver paint for this particular tractor. It was called chrome spray paint. Once i had sprayed this on evenly, left to dry and then resprayed it looked just like new. Obviously there are many colours of tractor out there. A good website for tractor paint is http://www.toy-mart.com/paint.html

Q: Where can I buy Britains farm models?

A: One of the best places to buy Britains models id from toy fairs and car boot sales. Ebay is a good source of models as well, but can often mean paying more then the model is worth due to the fact that so many people have access to ebay. There are also many good online shops which offer good models at prices which are better then high street shops. If you can find a high street shop selling Britains models you may lucky to find one or two that are obsolete stock or just the latest model. Depends on what your looking for.

Q: Where can i sell my Britains farm models?

A: The number one place to sell models is Ebay. Ebay offers you many ways to sell your models. You can auction them or just add a "buy it now" option to the model. The selling is fully customizable. You can specify the postage meathods and ammounts and payement meathods. You can list items on Ebay for upto 10 days. Ebay does charge you to use the service. this varies depending on what your selling and what your starting ammount is. You can add more images and other little tweaks that might up the chance of being bid upon. You can also sell models on a private website like this one. This may save you the Ebay fees but may not bring in the number or viewers that Ebay might.

There is now another way to sell your farm models. Its using a site called farmtoysauctions.com Its very similar to ebay. The advantages of this site over Ebay is that the fees are cheaper and it is specialized. It caters for all farm model manufacturers.

Q: When will Britains release new models?

A: Britains tend to release there new models twice a year. The first few models come out about January and then the 2nd group about September/October. The reason for this that during the developement of new models, changes are made my the companys like John Deere and these changes have to be reflected in the model. So changes are made to decal colours or exhaust position, taking more time and getting behind the deadline.

Q: I have a great idea for a new model, How do i share this idea?

A: You can do what a lot of children do and send a letter to RC2 with your idea. Although you may have the best idea in the world for a new model, that does'nt mean you will see it in next years catalogue. They way RC2 work is, when letters are sent in they record what it is. If there is alot of interest in a particular idea it may get looked at the next time the RC2 team are gathering ideas.

You can also join one of many online forums. Sign up and you can then share the idea with hundreds of other Britains model fans. The best one to use is www.britains-tractors.co.uk/forum/

Q: I have a Ford 8830 Power Farm tractor. When I turn on the power noting happens, What can I do?

A: A large number of the Power Farm models have this problem. This is normally caused by the motar ceasing up. Make sure you put a new battery in the bonnet. Check the connection points that touch the battery. Make sure they haven'nt got battery corrosion on them. If they have use a flat bladed screw driver to gently scratch off the corrosion until you can see bare metal again. If its still not working then get a pair of pliers and attach them to the PTO shaft out of the back of the tractor, and gently turn the PTO shaft round. This hopefully rotate the motor. Also apply some thin oil like WD40 to the worm gear.

This works in most cases. If yours still doesn't work, it maybe a fault you can'nt see, and so may have to strip it down to find the cause.

Q: I have just started collecting Britains farm models, but don't know all the variations in boxes and decals etc. Is there a book i can buy that has all the models in?

A: There are a couple of books been written about the Britains farm models. The most recent one was written by "David Pullen" Its a great book. It covers models from 1948 up to 1998. It retails at £17.95

I bought this book shortly after it came out and use it alot for cross referencing models I see for sale on Ebay with models in the book. You can buy this book and others from www.britainstoyfarm.co.uk

Q: I have a Britains JCB Loadall, sadly now the ram that holds up the telescopic boom has worn and falls down all the time. What can I do about this?

A: You can do a small modification to the Ram. Lift the boom as far as it goes so that it pops out of the shaft. Then with a pair pliers bend the end of the ram slightly 1 cm from the end that meets the bottom of the shaft.
